North Queensland Animal Rescue Inc. (NQAR) is a not-for-profit organisation based in Cairns.
The ball started rolling for us in April 2012 when a Facebook page was set up to bring attention to the dogs in local pounds who were in danger of euthanasia. We slowly gathered a few like-minded animal loving people, and started rescuing animals, one at a time from local pounds and placed them in with the couple of foster carers who’d put their hands up to help. Slowly the little group grew and grew until we decided to register as an Incorporated Association, and we were officially incorporated in July 2012.
Unlike other rescue groups in the Cairns area which are shelter based, NQAR puts all rescued cats and dogs into temporary homes with assessed foster carers. We believe this gives the cats and dogs the best chance at finding a new home as it removes them from a stressful shelter environment and gives them a safe space to live (and be trained) while they await their forever home.
Whilst in foster care the foster family has the chance to learn about the animal’s personality so they can help potential adopters to decide whether the animal is best suited to their family.
Of course we want the best for the animals that come through our care, so ask that all NQAR foster carers and potential adopters complete an application, sign an agreement and have a property inspection done before taking an animal home. We do this to ensure animals are being placed in the most appropriate home for their needs.
ALL animals that enter our care are desexed, vaccinated, microchipped and wormed.
